The Substitute Teaching in Mississippi Child Care Programs Initiative is a partnership between Wonderschool and the Mississippi Department of Human Services (MDHS) to create a statewide substitute teacher pool available to Child Care Payment Program (CCPP) providers registered with MDHS. One-time funding for the pilot program substitute teacher pool will be allocated through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

Learn more about substitute teaching

You get to pick your working location, hours, and schedule by selecting available shifts within the substitute teacher platform. You can generally assume shifts of 4 to 8 hours, some time between 6am and 6pm.  Responsibilities include:

  • Fill in for a teacher who has taken time off for vacation, illness, or other personal matters.
  • Care for children for the duration of your shift, ensuring a safe and engaging early learning experience.
  • Help with learning activities, art projects, music, meal times, outside time and more.
  • Work with a team of teachers - follow the lead of other teachers in the program and the director onsite.
  • Communicate with families about their child’s day.
  • Bring your best and brightest self to work - you will be providing an important and critical service for your community and the children in your care!
  • Complete a training and onboarding process with Wonderschool.

The more substitute teaching opportunities you match for and complete, the more money you can earn.

  • The hourly rate is $11+/hour for Caregivers and $16+/hour for Director Designees.
  • After you complete your first 40 hours of substitute teaching through our platform, you earn a $150 Loyal User bonus.
  • After every 200 hours of substitute teaching you complete through our platform, you earn a $150 Loyalty User bonus.
  • If you complete 150 or more hours of substitute teaching in one calendar month, you earn a $300 bonus.
  • If you accept a substitute teaching job that requires more than 60 miles of driving round trip, you will receive reimbursement at $0.655/mile for all miles over 60.
  • If you have refer someone who qualifies, completes background check screening and completes the first 40 hours of substitute teaching, you earn a $250 referral fee.
  • You will receive an initial training and orientation, as well as access to online professional development options.
  • Your substitute teaching can count toward your Child Development Associate® (CDA) credential, which requires 480 hours of working with kids in a licensed child care center.

To substitute teach in a Child Care Payment Program registered with MDHS, all substitute teachers must:

  • Successfully pass an FBI fingerprint check and Child Abuse Registry check.
  • Be patient, flexible, eager to learn, dependable, and comfortable working within a team.
  • Love working with young children 0-5 years of age.
